Suppose you want to ship a package quickly and easily. In that case, the United States Postal Service (USPS) offers First-Class Package service, which is one of the most convenient and affordable delivery options.

If you have not heard of this service, you may wonder about its different requirements, such as the maximum weight, girth, and length of items allowed for this service.

Moreover, does First-Class Package include lightweight packages?

You may also ask: What is the expected delivery time for the First-Class Package service? How is this delivery option different from other services, like Priority Mail Express and First-Class Mail? Can I track my parcel during the delivery?

Findpostoffice.org is an all-in-one site that can provide essential information about the nearest USPS post office in your area.

This article discusses USPS’s First-Class Package service and how it works, including which situations require this delivery method and how to track your package after you have sent it.

Read on to learn more about the nature, cost, and mechanics of sending and tracking first-class USPS packages.

What Is a First Class USPS Package?

USPS’s First-Class Package service is a cost-effective way to ship lightweight packages weighing up to 15.99 ounces to various United States (U.S.) locations.

This service can save you more money, especially for lightweight items, than other methods like Parcel Select Ground and Priority Mail.

USPS’s First-Class service can also offer fast delivery nationwide in five days or less. In some cases, the shipment can even happen in one day.

You can have USPS deliver your item to the following destinations:

  • Residential addresses
  • Local post office or PO box
  • Army post office (APO) for US Army or Air Force personnel
  • Fleet post office (FPO) for US Navy personnel
  • Diplomatic post office (DPO) for individuals abroad with duty-free import privileges

You can also track your package for free using USPS Tracking if you delivered your mail through First-Class Package Service-Retail (FCPS-R) and First-Class Package Service-Commercial (FCPS-C).

Who Can Use USPS First Class Package Service?

Anyone can use USPS’s first class package service if the parcel’s size and weight do not exceed USPS’s restrictions.

As per USPS’s guidelines, packages should observe the following limitations:

  • Maximum weight: 15.99 ounces
  • Maximum size:
    • 22 inches in length
    • 18 inches in width
    • 15 inches in thickness
  • Minimum size:
    • 5 inches in length
    • 3½ inches in height and
    • 0.007 inches in thickness

How Does USPS’s First Class Mail Service Work?

You usually have to confirm your packages’ dimensions before you can send them through First-Class Package Service.

The following table indicates the size and weight restrictions for packages sent using USPS’s first class package service.

Is USPS First Class Package the Same As Priority Mail?

Like USPS’s Priority Mail, the First-Class Package service allows eCommerce businesses to ship envelopes and parcels.

Sellers can also use these two USPS shipping methods to deliver items locally and internationally.

However, the following list indicates the differences between USPS’s Priority Mail and First-Class Package:

  • Priority Mail is usually faster than First-Class Package.

Priority Mail’s estimated delivery period is 1-3 business days, while the First-Class Package service is 2-5 days.

  • Priority Mail can ship packages up to 70lbs for some services. In contrast, the First-Class Package service puts a maximum weight limit of 15.99 ounces for items.
  • USPS’s First-Class Package service does not automatically include insurance. On the other hand, Priority Mail typically includes insurance (up to $100) and USPS Tracking.
  • It is typically more expensive to deliver items via Priority Mail than by First-Class Package service when items are under a pound.

Furthermore, Priority Mail offers two services: Priority Mail and Priority Mail Flat-Rate.

Priority Mail pricing depends on the package’s size, weight, and destination zone.

In contrast, Priority Mail Flat-Rate allows eCommerce businesses to use USPS-provided packaging and pay a one-time, fixed amount for any item (up to the service’s maximum weight).

What Makes a First-Class Service?

First-Class Mail is a first-class service because the USPS considers it a higher priority category than Retail Ground, USPS Marketing Mail, or Media Mail.

Therefore, USPS prioritizes First-Class Mail’s delivery process over other services.

You can check out the USPS website to find the following services:

  • Priority Mail Express
  • Priority Mail
  • Retail Ground
  • First-Class Mail
  • Media Mail
